Multimodal Project Proposal

My critical question dealt with technologies affects on the social skills of today's youth. For this project I am going to focus on teenagers, and how their heavy use of social media affects their face to face interactions.

I want the piece to be lighthearted and joking while getting to the point. Teenagers love social media for its trendy and viral aspect, and things that go vial are often funny. So I feel playing off that would be great. For my audience I will be focusing on those teenagers that use social mediums for the bulk of their interaction, specifically high-schoolers, between the age of 15-19. I want to compose a video, but do not currently have the time nor resources to make what I would like, so I believe I will make an advertising campaign for an app that only allows the user to use social media for an hour total a day. I will use a PowerPoint to show the positives of this "app" while using statistics on teenager time using social media. I will put a YouTube video in that adds to my message. I will also make a twitter page that advertises the app and make up mock flyers for it as well.

Project Proposal

My critical question is "how has technology affected the social skills of today's youth." I plan on studying children, mostly under the age of 5. I chose this group because I feel like they can shed some light on the social predispositions that humans have, and how we choose to interact before we are at the age where we use technology for this purpose. I do not interact with children often, other than family. My girlfriend and a few friends of ours work for the YMCA child watch and I will be able to observe as a fly on the wall and will also be able to ask a few of the kids some questions, such as how do they talk to their friends, what do they like to do in their free time, what kind of technology do they use (if they are old enough)? I will be using notebook or laptop to record my observations. I would like to get in this weekend, and also Tuesday if possible.

Blog 4. Responding to podcasts

The first podcast I listened to was the Batman podcast. This one was very enlightening to the the way people can affect others, just by the what they think about them. It's evident that it is a profile by how the entire piece is from the perspective of the person as he's being interviewed. He is asked questions and uses stories to answer those questions, like the the time he told a story about him helping another blind person by making him climb the tree. The other piece was more about different people's experiences during a certain period. The first one seems to be organized chronologically, from the beginning of his life onward, whilst the other was more about the little anecdotes told by different people.

I believe that I am going to study the children at the child watch at the YMCA my girlfriend works at. I do not know, and have never met any of the kids there, so I feel like I could easily observe them without bias. I plan on observing them interact with each other and then possibly ask them questions about what they like to do with friends and how they talk about them. I believe they can show me how kids are hardwired to be social and how that must evolve as they get older.

Crit Question w/ Artifact

The question that I revised is "How has the recent progression of technology affected the social skills of today's youth?"

This question is personally meaningful as my entire life basically revolves around technology. I have 2 cell phones, multiple TVs, gaming systems, the latest hip products, etc. etc. I life to have all my technology intertwined and working together so I wonder sometimes if I'm better off with it. It is definitely a hot button in today's society, as the question is constantly raised how much kid's should be around technology. It definitely has multiple ways of answering it and also has further questions that can stem from it. It definitely isn't broad but I don't feel that it is too specific as it is focusing on the age range where technology is most used (18-35 yr olds.) I also made sure to leave out any bias in the question so that it can be answered in any way. I feel that I can use this piece very effectively in any project because there will be an abundance of information on the subject and many different ways the question can be spun.

The first thing that comes to mind for an artifact is of course smartphones. I mean like I said I have 2, one for personal and one for work. I sell them for my main job, and the first thing most people think about the younger generation is that they are always glued to their phones. I worry that this may be one of those "No Shit" moments tho so I started to think about other things. Laptops and gaming systems come to mind, but still feel too specific. Then i thought about social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, heck even Tinder, and though I feel like those could play a decent role in the answer of the question, I also feel like they could take on a whole conversation of their own and neglect the question at hand. So I started to think outside the box with things like the new Tesla car that will be able to drive itself, but my favorite is definitely Netflix. Although it is not necessarily "technology" I feel like it epitomizes the stereotype of being glued to technology. I mean seriously, who hasn't had a full weekend binge of their favorite TV show? I love Netflix binges. Whenever I have a free moment (and admittedly even when I don't) I'll throw on the next episode of whatever show I'm watching at the time and just sit back and relax or even get some work done while I'm watching. So I feel like this connects to the culture of technology because it has a stigma of being a hermit for a day and locking yourself away from society while you watch a season of your favorite show, but at the same time it is known for it's "girl's night in" quality so to say, where you want to get your friends together who watch the same show and all sit in and have Ice cream while you laugh about the show. I really feel like it can be that abstract artifact that makes you wonder, while eloquently tying back into the use of technology as asked in the question.

Critical Thinking Question

As I sit here at my desk I want to clean up around me but I must finish this blog first. It's a cluttered mess around the apartment, as I've been very busy lately. Clothes and shoes thrown about like yesterdays trash, and actually I think there is a piece of trash from yesterday on the floor...yep a box of wheat thins I finished yesterday. Excuse me while I throw that away...

Ok I'm back. I should probably talk about some critical thinking stuff now. There is a question that really hits home with me. I ponder the question all the time and really want to answer how the progression of technology has affected the the social skills of society. I chose this question because my life entirely revolves around technology. I use technology for both work and play, and even when I just want to relax I throw a show up on Netflix. I don't know what I would do without technology and constantly wonder how my life would be different. With the three writings that I will do over the next 5 weeks I feel this question can fit into any categorically very well. There are many ways to look at this question and it can be attacked from multiple angles, Just as technology morphs to fit our every need.

150 Introduction

Hello,

My name is Anthony Queen but I prefer to go by Tony. It's a bit easier to get out and to the point.I, on the other hand am the complete opposite. As my blog suggests, I love to ramble and just go on and on and on and on and on and well yeah you get the picture. This rambling translates into my writing sometimes as well. It's hard for me to keep my thoughts aligned because my brain is always thinking way too far ahead. I am a double major in broadcasting and journalism. I want to go more into the radio or TV side of things, but I know that a healthy background of writing is a good booster. I do like to write though. I love writing down my rambles that don't necessarily follow a specific train of thought, but when it comes to professional writings I have a tough time. I am a perfectionist so I really want my first draft to turn out perfect, so I actually do editing on the fly. So as a writer I would like to get a lot more comfortable with drafts not being perfect and knowing that it will get better as I progress.
